About Blue River Support Services

Blue River work with young people aged 14-24 to support them into education, training and employment. Due to the high levels of deprivation in Sparkbrook/Greet and the current economic climate, young people have experienced high levels of unemployment and social exclusion. We support young people to develop skills, abilities and accredited qualifications that will enable them to improve their prospects and ultimately their quality of life.

We work with two main groups of young people. The first group are young people aged 14-16 who are out of mainstream school. These young people may be out of school due to behavioural issues, because they are newly arrived in the country or because they were unable to gain a school place.

These young people are at risk of having no qualifications post-16, which will severely damage their prospects and life chances. As documented in the Ofsted 2010 report "Reducing the number of young people not in education, training and unemployment" these young people also often have underlying issues such as low confidence, self esteem and a lack of basic skills. Blue River support these disadvantaged young people in self development and give them the opportunity to gain accredited qualifications improving their prospects.

We also work with people not in education, employment or training who are aged between 18 and 24. At Blue River they are supported to gain accredited qualifications and work experience. They also take part in enterprise courses designed to support their self development as well as give them core employability skills. To achieve this we work with a number of key partners including Intraining, Groundwork and Birmingham Voluntary Services Council.

Blue River takes into careful consideration the Brighter Futures strategy, Centerpoint's youth homelessness report, OFSTED's Reducing NEET report 2010 and the Council Plan 2008-13.
